Asheville Fringe Arts Festival set for Jan. 24-27

For 10 years, the Asheville Fringe Arts Festival has provided artists with opportunities to explore the edges of their work, collaborate across genres and bring innovative performances to culturally adventurous audiences. This year’s artistic mix includes local and imported actors, dancers, videographers, body painters and musicians presenting experimental works in cross-genre improvisation, Butoh dance, puppetry, theatre, modern dance, and performance art.

Dates for the 2013 AFAF are Thursday, January 24 through Sunday, January 27, 2013. Part of the fun of Asheville Fringing is getting out to the fabulous, often funky arts spaces all over town that host our performances, installations, and several after parties This year’s festival hosts seven different shows! All shows will be performed all four days of the festival. The goal is to get to as many shows as possible to experience the full Fringe effect. With careful planning, it is possible to see very show during the festival!

This year’s Fringe will kick off with a Fringe Opening Party at Timo’s House, 5 S. Biltmore on Sunday, January 20th at 7pm. Fringe Freak Passholders can pick up their Freak Passes at this event and Fringe artists, fans and the general public are invited to celebrate Fringe Week during this opening event! There will be live performances by Fringe Festival artists, including Judy Calabrese, Julian Vorus and Kathy Leiner.

The Asheville Fringe Arts Festival will also host after parties, starting around 10 pm each night of the festival in various bars around town. The after party for Thursday January 24th is at The Dirty South (70 W. Walnut). Friday’s after party is at 5 Walnut and Saturday’s after party is at Asheville Brewing Company on Coxe Ave.

There is an exclusive Festival Closing Party for Fringe Freak Pass holders and Fringe artists at MG Road on Sunday, January 27th at 7pm.

The complete Fringe Program Guide will hit Asheville downtown stores the second week of January. It will feature a complete schedule, artist bios and show information, map of venues and wonderful offers from sponsors. The four main venues for the festival this year are: the Bebe Theatre, the LaZoom Bus, the Asheville Area Arts Council, and 35 Below. Show times are at 7pm, 9pm and 11 pm. Each show runs about an hour, encouraging festival goers to see two or more shows a night.

Regular Fringe Arts Festival tickets are $12 each. Special Fringe Freak Passes will be available in a limited number from January 5-20. Fringe Freak Passes are all access passes to all the shows and the closing party and are sold for $50. Freak passes and regular tickets can be bought through the online box office.
