Despite its claim to green cred, the city of Asheville has never really had much of an Earth Day celebration.

This year, that appears to be changing.

Asheville Earth Day will be celebrated from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. on April 18 in high style with a ton of free music at Martin Luther King Jr. Park. Bands on the list right now include Laura Reed & Deep Pocket, Jen and the Juice, Karl Denson’s Tiny Universe, Sol Driven Train and High Windy. All for free. That’s pretty sweet. Greenlife Grocery and

Then on April 22, there’s a Battle of the Bands music competition at the Orange Peel. There will also be a swimsuit contest, with the requirement being that the suits have to made out of recycled material. That should be fun. Asheville GreenWorks is the sponsor. Deadline to enter the Battle of the Bands is March 31, and there’s a $1,000 prize for the winner.

I’m sure there are other assorted events. If you know ’em, list ’em in the comments, please.

The YWCA of Asheville is going to hold an event on Earth Day, April 22 at 8:00 am celebrating the agency’s 30 new solar panels.

Since he YWCA’s solar panels heat the water for the pool, there will be a sign-up special the week of Earth Day for Club W: The YWCA Health & Fitness Center. Sign up that week and get one free month. Also, if you sign up for the April 27 session of swim lessons you get a free lesson.
