Press release here:
On Saturday, May 1st, the Asheville Currency Project will announce the name of the paper currency being developed as a boost to the local economy. The project solicited name ideas from the community in a month-long contest. Over seventy nominations were made, from the practical “Asheville ACES” (stands for Alternative Community Exchange System), to the folksy “Smokey Mountain Hollers”, and the rather more whimsical “Weirdos”.
The Friends of the ACP–the community body that supports the project–are currently voting on the names in an online poll. Until midnight on April 30th any person who joins as a “Friend of ACP” can vote on their favorite name. A donation of $5.00 or one hour of volunteer time entitles anyone to become a Friend. Details about the contest, including all of the name submissions, are available on the ACP website at www.avlcurrency.com
The ACP is inviting the entire community to come to the unveiling. The name of the currency will be announced as part of the Firestorm Cafe May Day Art Show, on May 1st at Firestorm Cafe, on 48 Commerce St. The ACP will be holding a reception for the currency name unveiling from 6:30 PM to 7:30 PM, with the reception for the art show starting at 8 PM.
The Asheville Currency Project is a group of community-minded individuals who have been working for the last year on producing a local, alternative currency for the Western North Carolina area. Widely used in many communities throughout the United States, complementary currencies are a fun, legal, and effective way of building local economic resilience and empowering local communities.
