Press release here:

The Asheville Currency Project is launching an alternative paper currency for the Buncombe County area in late 2010.  They are asking the community to help choose a name for the currency.  From March 1st until April 15th, anyone can submit up to 3 names for the currency.

All submissions should be emailed to avlcurrency@gmail.com, along with your name and contact information.

Local currencies are popular in progressive cities throughout America, and the world, and have been shown to improve the local economy and civic spirit. The Asheville Currency Project wants to involve the community in what will be their currency as much as possible, which is why they are having this contest.

While anyone can submit a name for the contest, only Friends of the ACP will be able to vote on the name.  The Friends of the ACP is the democratic decision-making body that supports the Asheville Currency Project and votes on all major decisions concerning the currency. The Friends of the ACP has a membership fee of $5. Please visit the Asheville Currency Project website to become a Friend of the ACP.

Th winner of the contest will receive an Asheville Currency Project original t-shirt, as well as the satisfaction of naming our community currency.

The Asheville Currency Project is a worker-owned cooperative committed to providing the Asheville area with a reliable, local, paper currency that will help protect and enhance the local economy.
