ASHEVILLE, NC — The Asheville Art Museum’s ARTmob is pleased to present an Artist Talk with Gabriel Shaffer at Blue Spiral 1 on Thursday, March 4, 2010 at 5:30 p.m. This event is FREE. To register, call the Asheville Art Museum at 828.253.3227.
Gabriel Shaffer lives and works in Asheville, NC. The son of renowned folk/visionary artist Cher Shaffer, Gabriel was raised surrounded by many folk and outsider artists. In June 2002, at the age of 27, Shaffer had an epiphany while experimenting with painting. He has since focused solely on visual art.
Gabriel sold his earliest works in January 2004 during the Outsider Art Fair to several collectors and had his first exhibition in July 2004 at the Broome Street Gallery/Historic Cedar Tavern in New York City. Since then, his work has been received with acclaim. He has exhibited in over 90 shows and sold hundreds of works to collectors, galleries and museums throughout various major cities nationally and internationally, including a very strong debut with the Berenberg Gallery, Boston, MA at the Outsider Art Fair 2005.
Some of Gabriel’s more notable collectors include members of rock bands: Aerosmith, Nirvana, Foo Fighters, Nine Inch Nails, Marylin Manson,Weezer, Tool, Mastodon, Cat Power, Band of Horses, Kid Rock, best-selling Sci Fi/Fantasy author Tad Williams and Texas senator Wendy Davis. He has appeared in dozens of magazines, newspapers and blogs such as NY Arts Magazine, Art Papers, Traditional Home, US Airways Magazine, Cafe Royal, WNC Magazine, Lifelounge, Juxtapoz and Raw Vision. In 2009, Gabriel was juried as a top emerging artist in Western North Carolina for WNC Magazine’s On the Verge competition and voted the #1 visual artist for the Best of WNC awards in the Mountain Xpress.
