Ever since Appalachian State University beat Michigan in one of the biggest sports upsets ever a couple of weekends ago, we’ve been on the lookout for all things ASU. We found this:
The Appalachian State women’s soccer team will put their unbeaten record on the line this Tuesday as they host UNC Asheville. Three games into the season, the Mountaineers are 1-0-2 after a 2-0 victory over Tennessee Tech and a pair of 0-0 draws against Winthrop and UNC Wilmington.
This will be the 14th meeting between the two programs with UNC Asheville holding a 8-4-1 lead in the series. The Bulldogs defeated Appalachian 2-1 last season. The Mountaineers lead he series at home by a 3-2-1 margin. Last season UNC Asheville finished 10-7-3 overall and 4-2-2 in the Big South Conference to finish fifth.
Not that we’re big women’s soccer fans, but hey, this could be the next App State dynasty.
And when is somebody going to do the required story on how ASU merchandise is selling like hot cakes since the Michigan victory? O, somebody has. Read the Mountain Times story here.
Here’s a tidbit:
At Mountaineer Mania, co-owner Wanda Corriher got a shipment of Michigan tees with the score on them. “We got 10 dozen in, and sold out in two hours,” she said.
The Michigan tees are not the only hot item. Corriher said Mountaineer Mania has sold out of several items, including car flags, decals and several other shirt designs.
Jared Everett, president of eVarian, the company that hosts the GoASU.com Web site, said sales are equivalent to the National Championship. Everett has a contract with ASU to operate its e-commerce store.
“You can’t buy this kind of exposure,” Everett said of Saturday’s victory. As Everett tracked most the sales, he noted another phenomenon. “You wouldn’t believe the number of orders from Ohio,” he said.
Store owners are trying to restock their shelves in preparation for what is shaping up to be another championship season for the Mountaineers.
