A new Pack Park; a Parkside condo; and now a parkside Performing Arts Center

Today (Tuesday) at Asheville City Council, our elected officials will hear more about a plan to build a multi-million dollar performing arts center just south of the hottest property in Asheville — Pack Square Park.

As you know, the old City/County Plaza is a jumble of construction equipment, mud and fencing as the traditional heart of Asheville is remade into a jumping new Pack Square Park.

Add to that the simmering controversy over the proposed Parkside condominium project which, depending upon whom you side with, is either planned to be built on parkland, or adjacent to it. It’s literally planned to be built on the doorstep on Asheville City Hall.

Now come the fine folks who for years have been talking about building a new performing arts center in Asheville. The discussion first centered around whether or not to rehab the aging Asheville Civic Center and the Thomas Wolfe Auditorium. Since that talk has subsided, it looks like the folks who want a real performing arts center in Asheville have decided on a location.

Guess where? Here:

The recommendation today is to reserve property south of Parkside and bordered by Spruce St. to the west, Eagle Street to the south and South Charlotte to the east, expecting that construction will commencewithin five years.

Can the center of downtown get any hotter?

The performing arts center folks are talking about raising millions to build the center. Meanwhile, there’s a fine performing arts center out in Cullowhee at Western Carolina University. There’s a big new performing arts center under construction in Franklin, of all places. You can head down to the Peace Center in Greenville for a lovely experience.

But I guess we need our own.

Good, now bulldoze that piece of crap Thomas WolF auditorium and the Civic Center. We don’t need them in the city anymore and they are better placed at the AG Center for Tractor Pulls and Gun Shows.
