Here are some odds and ends we’ve picked up:
Restaurants old and new
Mountain Xpress says that Woodfin institution HB’s Drive-In has closed. What a loss, though some residents who have eaten there for years say they’ll miss the place.
Meantime, a new restaurant is opening in the old location of Left Bank on Patton Avenue. The new restaurant, set to open next month, will be called Sugo. Go to sugoasheville.com for more info.
Also, the new wine bar Vigne is now open in the Lexington Station condo complex on South Lexington Avenue, kind of behind the Orange Peel. Check it out, or go to vigneculture.com for more info.
Thomas Wolfe Fiction Prize
Billie Harper Buie of Asheville is the winner of the 2007 Thomas Wolfe Fiction Prize of the N.C. Writers Network for her short story, Shining Rock Wilderness. She gets a $1,000 prize and her story will be considered for publication by The Thomas Wolfe Review. Honorable mentions to: Jason Mott, of Bolton, for his story The Dream that was Arcadia, and to Leslie McCray, of Cartersville, Ga., for her story Climbing the Sphinx.
Beyond Bele Chere, there’s the fall edition of LEAF
The organizers of the Lake Eden Arts Festival are already pimping the fall edition of the lovely weekend musical festival at Camp Rockmont in Black Mountain. They’ve got a solo Michael Franti as a headliner.
