Asheville food fan Stu Helm is bringing back is Punk Rock Hot Dogs concept for a Saturday pop-up and food competition at Asheville Masonic Temple. The doors open and judging begins at 11:30 a.m., with hot dogs on sale to the public until they sell out. You can pre-pay here

Stu has long been a fan of hot dogs, and about four years ago he served up his own dogs at the Punk Rock Hot Dog pop-up at the ol’ Clingman Cafe. Now he’s bringing it back.

The event is a fundraiser for the Asheville Masonic Temple, which is trying to preserve the aging hand-painted backdrops in its theater and do some other renovation work.

Here’s more about the competition:

-To compete at the 2019 Asheville Punk Rock Hot Dogs competition, chefs were instructed to pick a punk band, no matter how obscure and from any era of punk, then design hot dog toppings inspired by that band. (Geraldine’s Bakery is providing the buns.)

-The competitors are: Chef Steven Goff of AUX Bar and Brinehaus Meat + Provisions; Chef Jamie Wade of Sand Hill Kitchen; Chef Jay Medford of The Underground Cafe w/ DoughP Donuts; Chef Witt Pinkerton of Tasty Beverage Company; Zack Neel aka Zack of All Trades; and Chef James Andrew Wright of The Pickled Beet Catering Company.

-A panel of three judges will try each dog and rate them all using a scale of 1 to 10 based on creativity, appearance, taste and “how fucking punk they are.” The hot dog with the highest combined score will be declared the Punk Rock Hot Dogs champ/

– Members of the public will buy tickets with which to buy hot dogs and will be able to vote for their favorite dog on paper ballots, which will be tallied when the dogs run out. The winner of the popular vote will be announced along with the judges choice.

-This event is co-produced by Stu Helm: Food Fan and Shay Brown Events
