If you walk around the streets of downtown Asheville on a weekend night you are bound to stumble upon a variety of musicians busking on corners, street performers entertaining crowds, live music streaming from local bars and galleries filled with individuals enjoying a variety of crafts. Although these are only a few examples of Asheville’s thriving creative culture, it is apparent that this is a city where the arts are widely celebrated and encouraged.

Open Hearts Art Center is a local non-profit art program that celebrates the power of creative activity on a day-to-day basis. Open Hearts is a nationally accredited community based non-profit art program that provides unique opportunities for differently abled adults to express themselves boundlessly and fearlessly in a variety of art-related activities such as painting, drawing, theater, songwriting, drama and much more.

Not only are the students at Open Hearts Art Center able to expand their knowledge and skills through collaborating with professional artists and crafters within the community, but they are able to showcase and sell their work to raise funds to support the organizations ongoing non-profit work.

This Saturday, Nov. 22, Open Hearts Art Center is holding an art show and opening reception at City Bakery downtown from 6-8 p.m. with music, food and libations to accompany the artwork showcased. This event is free and open to the public, with all proceeds directly benefiting Open Hearts. Come out for a great night of celebrating and supporting local art.

  1. I believe that this is the bakery where I saw a piece of art titled, “Crane” by a woman named Alice.? It was 150 dollars. Am I at the right place? And if it is, does the painting still hang on the wall there?
