We enjoyed this response to our post on the Wednesday dailies noting that the local TV news is telling us how “we first told you”…

moron detector sent this in:

You’re a moron. As per usual. “We first told you” means that is when WE first told you. It reminds viewers this is not the first time we’ve reported on a story. It does not mean we “broke” the story. Then we would really go nuts saying “we reported this before anyone else”… like the Waynesville Church political controversey. Now measure the thickness of your skull:) Go back to reporting on air guitar…

OK. As per usual, you dumbasses don’t get it. You’ve been watching to much teevee.

WLOS most certainly does mean to say “we broke this super big giant news” by saying things like “we first told you yesterday…” It’s the same thing with “an exclusive interview” with someone who has been interviewed a million times before. The same with all the “breaking news” that breaks out during sweeps.

It’s viewers like moron detector that the local TV news loves – Passive little couch sponges that just slurp up the pablum it dishes without ever questioning it.

Ashveg, you’re the best. Ignore Mountain Goat & Self-Moron Detector. They either work at WLOS or are really, really dumb. Maybe both. It is TV, after all. WLOS finally has what it needs, someone calling it on all the BS it likes to call news. Wish someone would open another station in downtown Asheville, then these obvious WLOS plants would have something to work on besides trolling your web site. Don’t let the man keep you down. Want to see more of Goat’s rants? He’s a frequent flier and self proclaimed guru on mediachatter. Sometimes I think he puts suff on so people will pay attention to his bizzare, WNC is the center of the universe, logic. Nice place, not the center, Goat.

The whole “Breaking News” and “We told you first” phrases are a bit misleading, especially in this market. The main thing to know is that WLOS has no competition in this market because there are no other stations in the market that dedicate to Western North Carolina. Also, WLOS and Asheville Citizen-Times don’t compete with each other. A lot of people think they do but that is far from the truth.

So in other words, WLOS will always be the first to tell you what’s going on.

“Moron Detector” must be wondering what that constant beeping sound is everytime he/she turns on the TV. My God, what kind of idiot needs to be “reminded” of a story from the day before. “Oh, yeah, now I remember that story. I had forgotten about the double homicide and suicide yesterday.” WLOS obviously means to suggest that they’re following up on yesterday’s scoop. Why not spare us the self-serving blather and just run one of those shell explosion icons on the screen that says, “News News News !!!” They could use the corner of the screen opposite the “Flood Watch” map.
    Grrrrr.
