knife_and_fork_2014Chef Nate Allen and his wife Wendy, the creators of Knife and Fork farm-to-table restaurant in Spruce Pine that has received national attention for its great food, plan to open their craft cocktail bar, Spoon, later this month.

Knife and Fork opened in 2009 in the small Mitchell County town and immediately began drawing rave reviews for its delicious, fresh food and cozy restaurant setting way off the beaten path. Allen, who loves mixology and owns a collection of cocktail books, is now ready to put the town on the map again with Spoon Bar. From a press release sent in January:

We are still making progress towards a winter opening of Spoon Bar, our craft cocktail, charcuterie and small plate focused addition next door. Stay tuned for more on that front. For more information about our winter activities, Knife & Fork, or Spoon Bar please feel free to contact us.

Can’t wait to check it out.

  1. Nice to see Spruce Pine get a meth alternative.

  2. Jason, have you heard any updates on the project that Nate Allen and the owner of 5 Walnut were supposedly doing here in Asheville, down at that property under the Jeff Bowen Bridge? I heard stories of bad mold problems in the building after Greenworks tried to move in . . . did that put a permanent hold on the plans for a restaurant down there?

How a place like that treads water in a little po-dunk town like Spruce Pine is beyond me.

Being pretty close to the Parkway helps, I’m sure, especially if you’re not inclined to stop at Little Switzerland on the stretch between Boone and Asheville.

But it’s a genuinely good restaurant, and Spruce Pine could do with one or two nice things.

  4. In my opinion Nate is the best chef in the WNC area, and I can’t wait to go to the bar. If the drinks are even close to as good as his cooking it will be a great spot!

  5. OMG! I just can’t wait… it’s surely going to be delicious! (Home-Simpson drooooooooooool!)
