First-time Asheville City Council candidate Kim Roney is getting some campaign fundraising help from a couple of local music stars.

Indie pop star Angel Olsen and rocker and DJ Greg Cartwright will be performing solo sets during a March 10 show at The Orange Peel. DJ Malinalli and Devyn Marzuola are also set to perform. The event starts at 8 p.m. Tickets are $20.

“Angel and Greg are inspirations to me as a musician and as a person: always pushing themselves to be better, never settling for less,” says Roney in a press release.

Olsen, who broke through with her 2014 release Burn Your Fire For No Witness, followed that up with My Woman last year, a record that’s received critical acclaim. Cartwright fronts popular garage rockers Reigning Sound and has numerous collaborative credits, as well as a solo record.

Roney, herself a musician (she teaches piano), has dubbed her campaign “Be ‘Bout It Being Better.” Her key issues include affordable housing, transportation, childcare and food policy.

Adding a little musical star power to a local political campaign may be a winning strategy. Two years ago, then first-time City Council candidate Brian Haynes held a campaign fundraising show at New Mountain AVL that starred his famous brother, Asheville native Warren Haynes, as well as several other well-known area musicians. Brian Haynes went on to win his election.
