Lots of action on Depot Street in Asheville’s River Arts District

Depot Street is perhaps the hottest street in Asheville right now. Construction on the multi-million dollar Glen Rock Depot project has passed the 50-percent complete mark. Construction has started on a new city recreation center to replace the aging Reid Center.

Meantime, a series of warehouse have been renovated and sparkle now as the result of one sweet paint job. The photos above show the series of buildings that are now brightly colored and feature a big mural of a dog or wolf. Loyal reader Marie told me to check this out, and I did. Now I need your help – who is responsible for this wonderful new artwork in Asheville?

And one more note – there’s serious renovation work happening in the building that once housed the old Depot Club. The building was recently up for sale for what looked to me to be a really affordable price. Anyone know who now owns the building, and what’s happening with the renovations?

All these projects make Depot Street the center point for major action that will vault the River Arts District to even more prominence in Asheville.

The ‘Depot Club’ has been bought by a former Asheville couple that moved to Italy and have now returned to lay down roots. Its in the process of being turned into a residence and studio. Its going to get a pretty significant face lift, too. I’ll keep the new owners names private since its not a commercial job.

Word on the street, or at least the parking lot of the wedge is gully from fine arts league did the building. And apparently stay tuned for a new tenent with some big creds…

The art is by the artist Ray Noland aka CRO aka the artist who has artwork on the ‘Jeweled Forest’ city bus.
He has recently relocated back to Chicago, but he left some of his incredible urban street-art style with us to enjoy.

David Frechter here. My partner, David Stewart and I are the owners of the former Southern Depot Club. Renovations are under way. The ground floor of the building will be David Stewart’s studio.
