Happy weekend! Here’s a quick look at some fun stuff to do around Asheville, including info about a free hug flash mob.



Asheville Firefighters Cancer Charity event: The Asheville Fire Department is asking the community to come out and support firefighter Will Willis, who is battling cancer. The 33-year-old is married and has four children. The event at Green Man Brewing starts at 5 p.m.

Seventh Annual Kinda Creepy Christmas Show: This art show features local artists including Maxx Feist, Nathanael Roney, Alli Good, Fian Arroyo, Jen Toledo, Tricia Tripp, Priya Ray, Justine Briggs, Zach Briggs and Hailie Rudig. It starts at 6 p.m. at Izzys Coffee Den on North Lexington Avenue.

East Asheville Tailgate Market, from 3-6:30 p.m. at Groce United Methodist Church at 954 Tunnel Road. Shop for winter produce, meat, bread, baked goods, crafts, jewelry, natural body care, florals and plants, prepared foods and more.

Friday and Saturday

Acting Like Humans, an immersive theater experience, starting at 8 p.m. at a downtown location disclosed to you when you buy a ticket.  Audience members will walk through this performance art installation and interact with whatever and whomever they come across. The show is co-produced by Campfireball, a community variety show which pursues old and new methods of engagement, entertainment, intimacy and surprise.


-Harmony for the Homeless, a benefit for Western Carolina Rescue Ministries, starts at 8 p.m. at Salvage Station. The fundraising event features Josh Blake, Patrick Armitage, Woody Wood, Daniel Ianucci, Simon Thomas George, Ryan Burns, Kyle Snuffer, Jonathan Cole, Alex Bradley, Derrick Johnson, Dennis Berndt, Stephanie Morgan, Lyric, Austin Haynes and Mike Live. All proceeds go to helping the areas homeless population.

-The Third Annual Holiday Craft Bazaar at the Asheville Music Hall and The One Stop, from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. The event will feature more than 25 vendors and is a great event for last-minute holiday shopping.

Jingle Bell Trolley Ride at the Craggy Mountain Line in Woodfin, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Come ride the trolley, meet Santa and have fun.

Hex Dance Party to benefit the Steady Collective, 8 p.m. to 2 a.m. at the Mothlight. Tarot readings from Sarah M. Chappell, drag performance from PartyFOUL, DJs Ganymede, Honey, and Mallinali.

-Austin-based nine piece Latin funk and breakbeat group Brownout presents Brown Sabbath at Ellington Underground, their rearrangements of Black Sabbath songs. Pitchfork called their album of the songs “exhilirating.” 9 p.m.-2 a.m. (Show at 10).


Free Hug Flash Mob, 3 p.m. at Pritchard Park. Elle Erickson and The Booth Fairy Project support positivity and love through their hug parades.

Bonobos at the BLOCK5-7 p.m. A multimedia presentation from Bonobo Conservation Initiative founder and Asheville native Sally Jewell Coxe. $10 and a portion of bar proceeds go to BCI. Read our interview with Coxe on Asheville Grit!


-A holiday double feature of Elf and Nightmare Before Christmas at The Orange Peel. 6 p.m. start.
