Just got this. The planning and zoning meeting mentioned is tonight. Here’s the note from loyal reader M:

There is currently a plan to put in a Chick-fil-A fast food restaurant with drive through at the Harris Teeter development on Merrimon. It’s not a done deal yet though. If you are concerned about more fast food in Asheville, excessive traffic on a street that can’t handle it or other issues about the Harris Teeter Phase 2 development then please do attend the meeting this evening at 5 pm at city hall, first floor. If you cannot attend then providing your comments – via e-mail – is the next best thing. Please send them to Julia Fields at [email protected] Julia is a planner with the city and is handling this project.

It is important that the Planning & Zoning Commission hear what we think about this issue. Appropriate development, with proper conditions/restrictions, can be a good thing for our neighborhood. But as many of you know, what a developer often has planned does not sit well with the adjacent neighborhood and can change the face of the general area for many years to come. Our voice can make a difference – so please take the time to attend the meeting or send in your comments!

By the way, Trader Joe’s development will have a side entrance on Chestnut too. And, since left turns out of Trader Joe’s onto Merrimon will be prohibited, many drivers will use the side entrance to turn right onto Chestnut and then turn left onto Merrimon from Chestnut. So when all is said and done…Chestnut will be a very busy street!

The plans for the Harris Teeter Phase 2 project are available through the City of Asheville’s Development Mapper. It is project # 231, and Harris Teeter Phase 1 is project #172.

Thanks!

Living on Merrimon, I will say that I’m not too thrilled. The traffic is already bad enough as is, will be worse with TJs and HT. i just cannot imagine throwing another drive-thru in the mix. Not to mention, Merrimon could easily be an extension of downtown with proper development.. Why ruin our beautiful area with poor development choices that do not foster community?

    / For dessert here’s a morsel I found on the net! /

By signing same-sex marriage into law, the Bible-loving Washington State Governor is helping to fulfill the predicted “days of Lot” (Luke 17) – days Jesus said would precede and hurry up His return as Judge – and she is thus making the Bible even more believable! After swelling up with pride, Mt. Rainier will be having a blast that Seaddlepated folks can share in lava-land!

Mmmm. A juicy, salty, crisply fried chicken breast. A soft, sweet, buttered and toasted bun. Two dill pickle chips. Add a side of waffle fries.

Even with that (disgusting) list of ingredients, I think Chick-Fil-A is a step up from other fast food joints, both in quality of food and quality of service. It’s not something I eat daily or even weekly, but when I want/need hot fast food, they are usually my first choice.

On a separate note, I also think that if you ask an openly Christian organization their stance on homosexuality or gay marriage, the question is rhetorical. People love controversy.

I hope you aren’t suggesting that all Christian groups are anti-gay marriage and against homosexuality. That’s simply erroneous.

Why don’t we just let God sort ’em out. Putting the word hate and Christian in the same sentence is ludicrous.

          Also, wasn’t this about chicken?

Every discussion in this town constantly has to turn into some BS political statement. People need to get lives.

Even the vaunted “KJV” is a translation of a translation of a translation, and one that was sanctioned by a king who was a known sodomite, so don’t get all high and mighty with the “correct Bible” thing.

By all means go to the meeting and comment. But like a lot of city zoning and development related issues, the city has probably already decided what its going to do. As you put it, Merrimon is already congested and can’t stand more traffic, but for the city that’s not a valid argument against additional development.

So gross what Concerned Citizen posted. That is a lot of chemicals for a sandwich. With your money going toward factory farms, styofoam cups, anti-LGBT legislation, and obesity.

WLOS covered it last night and it goes to City Council meeting in January
