dance_for_democracy_asheville_2015Looks like a great event. Press release here:

Local advocates have organized Dance for Democracy, a night of dancing to great music from Motown to rock ‘n roll and swing to hip hop – to promote and protect the right to vote in North Carolina.

The Orange Peel has generously donated the venue for the event, which runs from 8 pm to midnight on Friday, August 14th. Popular DJ Marley Carroll will cue up the tunes. Table seating will be provided for non-dancers.

Tickets are $10 and $50 for patrons (includes pre-party with complimentary appetizers and drinks) – go here for more info and to purchase tickets.

“Many of us are concerned about the direction of our state, particularly the new law that makes voting much more difficult,” said Kim McGuire, board member of Democracy North Carolina, which the event will benefit. “Dance for Democracy is a fun way to support the work it takes to defend our fragile democracy and to help put our state on a better path going forward.”

In addition to raising funds the event will invite people to volunteer on voter registration and outreach with various nonprofit groups that are working to expand voter participation in western NC.

Holy hell, pointing out the truth that Democracy NC is a BlueprintNC affiliate is not “demonizing.” Unless, of course, you want it to be.

It just seemed to be information that was missing from the post. I’m a giver.

  3. Lotta great organizations there. I’d be proud to be part of it. I suspect your attempts to demonize them will only drive more people to volunteer to do good works. Keep it up!

Hey Kim McGuire, the ‘new law’ does NOT make voting more difficult for anyone with an ID …strive to be smarter than an idiot.

Oh, and we are NOT a freakin’ democracy !!! There’s a reason why the word does NOT appear in the Constitution!!!

    • Hey, Insult Guy. The law does make it more difficult for the segments of our population that tend to not have a valid drivers license: seniors, the poor, minorities, etc. These are the people that are the intended targets, and everyone knows it. “Voter fraud” is a fraud itself. It’s just a numbers game: shave a few percentage points off of voting groups that tend to lean Democratic, and GOPers hope to win more elections.

It must be depressing for you to contemplate, I know. But one of the ways that the political right in this country has chosen to fight, is to make it more difficult for people who disagree with you to cast their vote. Sad, very sad, to go through life hating democracy so much you’ll actually try to weaken it.

        Mr. Summers,

Thank you Sir. You have crystallized my thoughts eloquently!

        • Thank you.

Oh, and Unaffiliated – the reason “democracy” does not appear in the Constitution is that 240 years ago, people understood it to mean “Athenian-style democracy”, which is wildly different from the “American-style democracy” that has evolved since. Definitions and popular understanding of words change. I believe that if the concept of the type of democracy we practice today existed back then, it absolutely would have been written into the founding documents.

I also believe that the “We’re a Republic, not a Democracy, dammit!” mantra that has become a staple of the right in recent years, comes from a desire to diminish the appreciation of the style of government we have created since the documents were signed.

I know – let’s go back to the days when only white, property-owning males were allowed to vote. Now, that’s America!

      • Ah, there it is. The bigotry of low expectations.

      • “shave a few percentage points off of voting groups that tend to lean Democratic, and GOPers hope to win more elections. ”

-Exactly. Why not do a bit of gerrymandering too, while they’re at it? Oh wait- they did, imho.

      • The Real World says:

“Voter fraud” is a fraud itself”.

Barry – you are utterly out-to-lunch. Or maybe just naive beyond belief.

        Voting fraud is a given!
        1) There are countless examples around the country of people double voting (in 2 different districts). No doubt they got paid to do so.
        2) About 9 months prior to the 2012 election I watched a Princeton IT professor and 2 of his students demonstrate how utterly easy it is to hack into voting machines from a laptop 50 yards away (or from anywhere) and flip votes. Easy peasey!
        3) There are courtroom videos on YouTube of softwear developers, under oath, describing how they were hired to create undetectable viruses on voting machines to manage (change) votes.
        4) And how about this lovely: http://www.ejfi.org/Voting/Voting-56.htm
Not a stretch to think that the reason a voting machine company is willing to pay 134K! in bribes to a NC Election Official is cuz they REALLY needed their machines to be used. Get it…nod, nod, wink.

C’mon Barry. There is zero reason for any US citizen not to produce valid ID to vote. However, at this point, voters double or triple voting is likely small potatoes relative to the much easier electronic voting fraud engineered by the real powers-that-be.

facts get in the way of Barry Summers and his local ilk of uber-‘progressives’…

wonder if they’ve discovered by PROGRESSIVISM has FAILED in America for the past 100 years?

city council candidates will be asked this soon.
