What's in a name?
Remember meteorologist Mike Simon of "NewsChannel 3" WTKR (CBS)? After WTKR cut him loose in early October, he signed on as the chief meteorologist at Sinclair Broadcast Group's "News 13" WLOS (ABC) Asheville NC; market #35 (Hampton Roads is #41). BUT don't look for "Mike Simon." At News 13, he's known as Mike Cuevas. VARTV hears that he's using his Spanish wife's surname. He wanted to use it at WTKR and was told – no. Cuevas does the weather on the 5, 5:30, 6 and 11PM newscasts for WLOS. Christy Carlo did something similar when she left WAVY (10/NBC) for the "Imus In The Morning Show" and now MSNBC. She started using her real last name – Musumeci. This is common practice in the media…. (12/12/03)
Asheville’s always been a "stepping stone" market for people in broadcasting. It’s a place to get your on-air feet wet and move on to bigger markets when ready for the move. Some folks stay because they love the uniqueness of the Asheville market or get in to another field while here. It’s typical behavior for broadcast markets our size. Personally, I’ve seen some amazing national quality voiceover talent stay in the area because of their love for the people and the region.

I was really sad to see Courtney leave. After repeated calls to WLOS about our backyard flooding, she was the only one that cared enough to come out and see what was going on. She gave us some exposure and has forced the city and Beulah Chapel to re-evaluate this issue. Charu Khamaria called us a few years earlier and said it wasn’t an important enough story. The sad thing is that all of the good ones do leave WLOS after a short time. It speaks volumes for not only WLOS but also Asheville. What does this city have to offer young talented professionals? What can they do to retain them. Asheville can not continue to cater to retired part-time residents if it wants to have a thriving economy. I think we need a good mixture of both working professionals and retirees, but with the lack of jobs that actually pay living wages, lack of multicultural entertainment, and lack of decent and affordable housing – young professionals are forced to move on to greener pastures. Good luck in the future Courtney and keep in touch with us!
i agree with the above poster (dan thompson)… only the bad ones stay… i have never ever seen a worse on air person than julie wunder. unfortunately i DO have watch the morning news and am stuck with her awful sense of humor and bumbling weather "reports." (calling it a "report" is a stretch, as she is rarely able to complete a full sentence without tripping on her words.) at least leigh ann long is on there now and has some sense of professionalism!

WLOS is the employer of some of the very worst on-air tv people in any city: Larry Blunt, Sherilll Barber, Jay Siltzer and the very un-funny John Le. These people are terrible at what they do and should have all been fired years ago.
Yes, this station will always be a revolving door. Ony the really bad ones stay.
On a positive note, I think the new weatherman Jason Boyer is very good and far better than the creepy Mike Cuevas he replaced.

Just another young person trying the make in tv news, doing a stint in a small city like Asheville, and either moving to a big market or getting out of the biz I never thought she had much of an on-air presence…she really does look bored in that pic. It will always be a revolving door at WLOS.
Seems like WLOS is more or less just a training ground for reporters. Come to WLOS, get a couple years experience, move on to a bigger market. Most don’t tend to stick around too long, do they? Thank goodness for Sherrill Barber.
