counter_culture_coffee_2013Cool for coffee lovers. Press release:

Hello,

Starting this weekend, Counter Culture Coffee will host “The Variety Show” – a free and open-to-the-public traveling tour of coffee events led by Erin McCarthy (2013 World Brewers Cup Champion) and the owners of Finca El Puente coffee farm in Honduras.

The fun and educational events will be held at Counter Culture’s Training Centers in Asheville, Atlanta, Boston, Chicago, Durham, New York, Philadelphia, and Washington, D.C. The tour will kick off at Counter Culture’s home base in Durham and end at their new flagship Training Center in NYC. Sponsors include Kalita USA, Bonavita, Baratza, and ESPRO.

During the first part of each workshop, guests will hear about coffee farming experiences from Moises and Marysabel Herrera, the owners of Finca El Puente (the renowned “Purple Princess”) coffee farm. Ten of Finca El Puente’s coffee varieties – ranging from Robusta to Gesha – will be available for guests to taste. Following, Erin McCarthy will offer brewing tips and speak about his winning competition experience at the World Brewers Cup in Melbourne, Australia, this past spring. Light food and beverages will be served, and a pop-up shop with whole bean coffee, small wares, and merchandise will be available.

Raffle tickets will be offered at each event, with proceeds to benefit the World Coffee Research association. Prizes include Kalita brewers, Baratza grinders, BonaVita kettles, and other items from Counter Culture Coffee. A grand prize drawing – for a personal coffee brewing experience in the winner’s home (or a coffee shop) with Erin McCarthy – will take place at the final event in NYC.

Schedule as follows (7 – 9 p.m. at each location):
Sat., Oct. 5th – Durham Training Center
Mon., Oct. 7th – Atlanta Training Center
Wed., Oct. 9th – Asheville Training Center
Fri., Oct. 11th – Chicago Training Center
Sun., Oct. 13th – Washington, DC Training Center
Tues., Oct. 15th – Philadelphia Training Center
Thurs., Oct. 17th – Boston Training Center
Sat., Oct. 19th – New York Training Center
Founded in 1995, Counter Culture Coffee is a cult favorite coffee roaster based in Durham, NC. Counter Culture approaches its work with a passion for the ideal of coffee perfection, a dedication to real sustainability, and a commitment to cutting-edge education throughout the coffee supply chain. Served in some of the country’s top restaurants, Counter Culture Coffee is available in coffee shops, specialty grocers and at counterculturecoffee.com.

To clarify, from loyal reader Kirsten:

Erin McCarthy is actually not the owner of the Finca El Puente Coffee Farm.  He is the 2013 World Brewers Cup Champion and a part of the NYC Counter Culture Team, who will be presenting. Moises and Marybel Herrera, the owners of the coffee farm, will be presenting as well.

An address for this event would have been nice. Now I have to go elsewhere to find it. I didn’t even know that Counter Culture Coffee had a training center here. Sure sounds like a cool thing to do and I believe I will.
