Open letter: Thinking of you

Hey  you, Thank you for your note. I’ve been thinking about you, too. It’s difficult to express, but I’ll give it a shot. This time of year has me reflecting on the course of the past year , and on the people who have really made a difference for me. As you know, a brutal break-up has had me taking[Read More…]

On the streets of Ashvegas: New location of Rocky’s Hot Chicken Shack

Work is moving along on Rocky’s Hot Chicken Shack, which will be located at 1455 Patton Ave., in the former Tomato location. Rocky’s partner in the business told me Tuesday that she learned some cool history about the building – it was originally built in 1968 and was the location of Yogi’s Honey Chicken Shack. Anyone remember that?

On the streets of Ashvegas: World AIDS Day 2010 rememberance

Photo by Jerry Nelson/ journeyamerica.org The Asheville Citizen-Times covered the event, held at Pack Place: “In the ’80s we did something that we never should do again,” said Pam Siekman, chairwoman of World AIDS Day events. “We turned our back on people who were dying. We turned our backs in many ways. … We let healthy people die, and in[Read More…]

On the streets of Ashvegas: Police protest

Photo by Jerry Nelson /journeyamerica.org Wednesday night a group of about 75 people marched through the streets of Asheville to show their support of the so-called Asheville 11 and to denounce police. The protesters banged drums and called the cops “pigs” and “murderers.” A strong contingent of police – I counted seven Asheville Police Department cars and one unmarked State[Read More…]

On the streets of Asheville: Church in a park

Anyone know anything more about the church that was holding services in Pack Square Park this summer and early fall? They have a big sign that says “Yahweh is God of the City,” and they have live music. There’s also much laying on of hands, as shown here. Does the church pay the city for access to the park? Can[Read More…]
