Need a last minute local gift for a beer-loving friend or family member? How ‘bout a copy of Asheville Beer: An Intoxicating History of Mountain Brewing by local writer Anne Fitten Glenn, aka Brewgasm?

She’ll be signing Asheville Beer this Saturday, December 15, at Malaprop’s Bookstore & Café from 3 to 5 p.m. Then she’ll be at The Thirsty Monk downtown on Monday, December 17, from 6 to 8 p.m. The book costs $16.99, but she’ll make it priceless by writing a beery love note in it.

You might as well invest in something to keep yourself and your friends entertained as we all go over the fiscal cliff in January. Speaking of fiscal cliffs, we asked AF what mixed six-pack of local brews she wants to take with her over the cliff.

Here’s what she has to say:

  1. Oskar Blues Ten Fidy Imperial Stout. If I only get six brews, I want at least one that’s higher in alcohol by volume to ease the pain of hitting the bottom of the cliff. Plus this one’s only sold in cans, so no breakage! Not being brewed in Brevard quite yet, but it will be in 2013. (And yes, I now work for Oskar Blues so I’m kind of partial to their liquids).
  2. French Broad Brewing’s Barleywine. Their special holiday release beer this year. Barleywine beers are higher alcohol too. Plus they have a sweet bite that’s a perfect pairing with leftover turkey sandwiches. Or with peanut butter sammies for those on post-holiday low-budget plans (I’m with ya).
  3. Highland Brewing’s Cold Mountain Winter Ale. Because everybody wants one, and this year’s brew may be the best ever (again!). Can I take one of the pretty blue bomber bottles with me, please?
  4. Pisgah Brewing’s Valdez. My two favorite beverages are beer and coffee. When I get the chance to have them both in the same bottle, I get a thrill. Brewed with local coffee roaster Dynamite Coffee’s beans, this beer’s like a shot in the arm. In a good way.
  5. Green Man’s ESB. It’s a classic, y’all. But they aren’t bottling it—yet. So I guess I’ll have to take a keg with me over the cliff. It’ll be just like going over Niagara Falls, right?
  6. Asheville Brewing’s Shiva. Another local classic. Plus, cans and cliffs go together like, well, hops and grains. Having an image of the Hindu destroyer god along for the dive off the cliff can’t hurt, right?

Asheville Brewing poured Shiva during the last “Hickory Hops” Beer Fest. They had the hops filter set-up and it was worthy of brewgasm…”Fire Escape” is another one of their offerings…TASTY!

Tried the Pisgah Brewing Valdez today and was very favorably impressed. Halfway between a cup of strong local coffee and a tasty stout. http://beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/10153/39893

    Will buy again.
