Ashvegas, site of world dog dancing championships

Ashevegas is going to be the site of some kind of “world championships” for dog dancing. I think I saw a story about this once a year or so ago, and it looked pretty freaky to me. Here’s the official web site. The event will be held at the Holiday Inn Sunspree, starting tomorrow. I’ll definitely be there to check[Read More…]

More on Waynesville’s pulpit politics

The controversy over Pastor Chan Chandler’s preaching at East Waynesville Baptist Church pretty much ended earlier this week with his resignation. But there’s still plenty of reaction out there. Check out Scott McLeod’s thoughtful opinion piece in the Smoky Mountain News, Waynesville’s alternative weekly. The publication also offers a little more nuance in its series of stories that you’ll find on[Read More…]

Top 25 reasons to visit Ashvegas

Here’s the link to the cover story of Froemmer’s Budget Traveler magazine, which I mentioned in an earlier post. Here are a couple of my favorites: The banned-book list at Malaprop’s: In addition to titles of gay, lesbian, and transgender interest—and separate sections for graphic novels and local writers and poets—this very independent bookstore has several shelves of books currently banned[Read More…]

UNC Ashvegas gets a new chancellor

UNC Ashvegas gets a new chancellor

The local newspaper has the story here. Turns out that it’s Anne Ponder, an Asheville native who has been at Colby-Sawyer College in New Hampshire. As we know here in the mountains, there are two clans of Ponders – the teachin’ Ponders and the preachin’ Ponders. Guess she’s one of the teachin’ kind. Here’s her bio. From everything I’ve heard, people[Read More…]

Alvy apparently took his own life Wednesday. Alvy left a suicide note, according to the police who are investigating. Aside from all of that, Alvy was a wonderfully giving person[Read More…]

There’s some neat stuff happening over at Scrutiny Hooligans, a fellow Ashvegas blogger. You need to check it out. Screwy’s site is beautiful. From ‘Flashdance’ to ‘Felicity:’ Just trying to keep up

There have been so many celebrity marriages and pregnancies and such, I’m just trying to keep up. Renee and Kenny: Guess y’all saw that these two hooked up recently. I’m not much of a Zellweger fan, but Chesney kicks ass. I love his country/beach twang. Britney: I know it’s old news, but she’s such a style-setter for young hos these[Read More…]

WLOS: Where are they now?

You can tell it’s sweeps when every newscast begins with “HUGE, GIGANTIC BREAKING NEWS!” We get it people. The other day, I was reminiscing about some of the old WLOS-TV personalities. Ryan Adams, reviewed

From a true Ashvegas audiophile – hell, le’ts just call him Audiophile for now. Here’s his take on last night’s Ryan Adams show at the Thomas Wolfe: Grizzled Adams Ian Stewart would be jealous. Even the tenured Stones sideman didn’t get to bust out a hushed, solo version of Brown Sugar on piano during a show. Alt country poster boy[Read More…]

Waynesville church: the letters to the editor

Did you guys see the Waynesville church story on ABC’s World News Tonight last night? Jake Tapper did the story as part of an ongoing “politics and the pulpit” series. It was the regular fare, just more slickly produced. I was hoping they would interview the pastor, Chan Chandler, but that didn’t happen. Meantime, the local newspaper is filling up[Read More…]
