Nintendo, pimp my ride

Nintendo, pimp my ride

Nintendo scored a marketing hit at Bele Chere with a couple of pimped out minivans and SUVs. At least, I think that’s what they were. There were so many video screens packed into the vehicles that I couldn’t really tell. Anyway, this little guy was having a blast. Kids and grown-ups alike thrilled at playing NBA Street 3 and some[Read More…]

Turning heads

Turning heads

This young lady was turning heads everywhere she went Saturday. More than one man stopped and turned to watch her go by, with her stilleto heels clicking on the street. Drunks oogled her, walked beside her and propositioned her. She smiled politely and just said, “Thank you” to what I’ll politely call compliments. One old dude saw her pass and[Read More…]

Detritus

Detritus

Being part of the Bele Chere clean-up crew must really suck. Look at what they have to deal with. The city really should do more to set out more garbage cans for the fesitval, and more locations for people to recycle. Every can I saw at 5 p.m. Saturday was beyond overflowing. The city workers I talked with that were[Read More…]

Jesus freaks vs. just freaks

Jesus freaks vs. just freaks

The Christians on Pack Square spent most of Saturday sitting quietly near the Vance Monument with their ginormous signs as the great unwashed passed by. But as the day wore on, and the alcohol sunk in, the great unwashed began challenging the Christians. This, of course, is exactly what the Christians want. They want people to get in their face,[Read More…]

Bele Chere Saturday night: biggest night ever for Ashvegas music?

Bele Chere Saturday night: biggest night ever for Ashvegas music?

Here’s an interesting post from the Citizen-Times’ Bele Chere blog. The photo is from the WLOS 11 o’clock news, where they just had a quick blurb on Blues Traveler: Has there ever been a bigger night for live music in downtown Asheville than Saturday? Think about it. Blues Traveler and the Derek Trucks Band was a huge hit for Bele[Read More…]

Ashvegas: a pet-lover’s town

Ashvegas: a pet-lover’s town

Animals are banned from Bele Chere, but the Purina dog show area at the corner of Patton and Lexington was a big hit Saturday. I caught the end of the show, when Jetta the Belgian Malinois came charging out of the tent to catch some Frisbees. The trainer said Jetta had been dropped at an animal shelter because its owner[Read More…]

The thong song

The thong song

You got the song, she’s go the thong, and she doesn’t care. Meantime, these guys (below) were getting a lot of looks and laughs. The guy in the middle’s T-shirt says “Think Big.”

Bele Chere, christened

Bele Chere, christened

Folks, this entry is why you love Ashvegas. You won’t see this side of the street party anywhere else. So let me walk you through this. I’m hanging out listening to Yo Mamma’s Big Bad Booty Band at the Battery Park stage, just minding my own business, trying to get some shots of people having a good time, when I[Read More…]

Bele Chere security

Bele Chere security

I felt much better after WLOS interviewed this Ashvegas cop about Bele Chere security. Much better. Sheesh. Who is she gonna arrest? Like she’s gonna be able to help when a couple of drunk rednecks get into it Saturday night after a full day of drinking. C’mon guys, the motto is “protect and serve,” not “protect and grow old.”

Bele Chere’s soggy opening

Bele Chere’s soggy opening

This was the festival about 12:30 p.m. It rained a lot Friday morning and the sprinkles kept up for another couple of hours before things finally cleared up. This was my view of the Battery Park stage as I listened to a Beatles cover band. Will the rains stay away for the rest of the weekend?

WLOS at work

WLOS at work

We spotted Michelle Boudin and Julie Wunder as they prepared to hit the airwaves with live stand-ups Friday. Not that they were hard to find, what with their van with the giant tower sticking out of it. But what’s up with the plain white van? I always think it’s odd, too, how the TV personalities hide out in the truck[Read More…]

The Aussie

The Aussie

Lots of folks were into this Aussie down at the Coxe Ave. stage Friday. His name is Xavier Rudd. I’d never heard of him before, but his show was cool. Seemed to be a very talented musician and a very down-to-earth guy who was moved by the appreciative crowd.

Bele share the love

Bele share the love

At the Xavier Rudd show, this friendly lady asked, “Can I blow some glitter on you?” I smiled and passed. “But you’d look really cute.” No, thanks, I smiled. She moved on to the next, and the next. She found plenty of takers. Feel the love.

Bele Chere Hula-Hoopsters

Bele Chere Hula-Hoopsters

The hippies are into the hulas. I saw a couple on Friday, none better than this young woman who was running from music venue to music venue to spin off into her own world. As you can see by the photos, she was really into it. And she was damn good.

Marshall Tucker Band

Marshall Tucker Band

We’re a sucker at Ashvegas for some sweet Southern Rock. The Marshall Tucker Band, out of Spartanburg, S.C., played Saturday evening and sounded decent. They drew a nice sized crowd. A little “Fire on the Mountain” got things moving. And you’ve got to love a rock band with a flutist.

‘Goths in the Mist’

‘Goths in the Mist’

This one I call “Goths in the Mist,” though I’m not sure they’re really goths. I did see a dude with an ankle-length black vinyl jacket, Matrix like, with a cool mowhawk, but I missed snapping his photo. Maybe I’ll catch him Sat.

Bele Chere child labor

Bele Chere child labor

There are a number of roving festival information folks you’ll find at the fest. You’ll spot them by the yellow signs they carry. Only in this case, the festival volunteer has signed up a little girl to do the heavy lifting. Seems a bit sadistic, but anything for the festival, right?

Bele Chere backsides

Bele Chere backsides

You can tell a lot from a person by looking at their butt. Stuck in the Ashvegas streets with thousands of other sweaty, drunk hippies and rednecks, you tend to see a lot of ass. I will be showing you some herewith. Lots of folks today like to center their tats right over their butt cracks. We’re not sure why.[Read More…]

Bele Chere Day 1: One seething mass of humanity

Day 1 of Bele Chere is in the books. What you’ll be seeing over the next few days here on Ashvegas will be almost exclusively Bele Chere-related posts, because the festival has taken over town. We’re throw in some WLOS noise, too, just to keep it real. But it will mostly be Bele Chere. Just walking around tonight, some themes[Read More…]

WLOS Wednesday dailies 7/27

Le makes par John “Punnyman” Le scored with his relatively pun-free report on some crazy dude who wacks a golf ball around his yard up on some mountain. Le treated his source with respect, kept himself out of the story, and painted a warm portrait of a man having fun in his own little world. Again, Le’s flashes of brilliance[Read More…]

More Bele Chere predictions

My Bele Chere predictions spurred a couple of you to offer your own. Here we go: Edgy Mama says: Easy predictions, Ash! Let’s get more specific. I’m predicting the huge thunderstorm for Saturday afternoon. OK. I can roll with that, not that your prediction was all that edgy, Mama. But I’ll work on mine. (By the way, I love your[Read More…]

Holly’s in

Holly Jones has answered those questioning whether or not she’s still got the fire in the belly for another run at Ashvegas City Council – she’s in. During her past couple of years on council, Holly has gotten married and adopted a child. All that, on top of her job as exec director at the Y-Dub. That’s a lot of[Read More…]

Blog bits: Poker, petty porn theft and more

Speaking of gambling Y’all know I just got back from Las Vegas. With gambling on the brain, I was surprised to see that Mountain XPress had an interesting cover story last week on local video poker. The story could have gone further, but it’s a start. If you missed it, check it out here. From the crime blotter Local newspaper[Read More…]
