Ashvegas: The City You Love. The News You Want. Some of what’s going around:

-The Joy Ride returns: From the announcement. Go to www.ymcawnc.org for all the info:

The JOYride is a cycling event created by local legend Laurey Masterton to raise scholarship funds for LIVESTRONG at the YMCA. This program serves cancer survivors in Western North Carolina on their journey to meeting holistic health goals. It will be held Saturday, September 12th, 2015 ǀ 9 AM ǀ All rides start and end at the Fletcher YMCA. The registration fee is $51.50.

Many people knew Masterton’s motto, “Don’t Postpone Joy.” This event was created as a fun way to support the survivorship program that helped her along her journey. With close to 200 survivors on the list prior to the inaugural JOYride, Masterton’s goal was to raise enough funding for 100 survivors to participate in the program. Thanks to funds raised by the JOYride, in addition to funding from community supporters Mission Health System and Pardee Hospital Foundation, the program has been able to more than double in size, dramatically decreasing the waitlist.

-In case you missed it: I know you didn’t but I just want to note it – gas is under $2 a gallon in Asheville for the first time in a decade.

-Work is underway on the new White Labs tasting room and yeast lab at a former city of Asheville-owned building on Charlotte Street.

-Work is also underway to convert the former Two Guys Hoagies restaurant into a Taco Mia restaurant.

– Speaking of tacos, Tacobilly is set to open on Haywood Road in East/West Asheville. Breakfast tacos, anyone?

CharBar No. 7, a small regional restaurant chain based in Charlotte, is planning to open a restaurant in the former Frankie Bones/Daughtery’s location in Gerber Village in South Asheville.

-It looks like Tesla is planning to open a Supercharger station on Brevard Road in Asheville, says this Twitter-er.

-Loyal Ashvegas reader Jared shares this Loopnet link that says a new Publix grocery store is going in next to the Weaverville Crossing shopping center on Weaver Boulevard in Weaverville.

-Loyal reader Jen says that the Asheville tattoo shop of celebrity tattoo artist Ami James, Love/Hate Asheville, looks like it has closed on Wall Street downtown. She also references this from James.

Where is gas under $2 a gallon, and why wouldn’t you have included that info in this post in the first place? The Hess station on Hendersonville Road that is usually one of the cheapest in the area is still at like $2.19 . . .

Sams club is $1.94. Ingles on new leicester (which is now usually CHEAPER than Hess (now Speedway)) is less than sams.

Also in East Asheville, several stations along Tunnel are under $2. Both Ingles, the Sunoco near the Best Western (by the entrance to Haw Creek), and Enmark are all either $1.99 or $1.94.

More research needs to be done on the Publix in Weaverville part. That loopnet is just a description of a property next to where the Publix is (supposedly) going in. I was told the Publix story prematurely ran in the Weaverville Tribune and has since been pulled.

I thought Putt-Putt Fun Center disappeared years ago. Locations in Anderson, Greenville, and Spartanburg in South Carolina closed many years ago. If it is opening new locations like Weaverville Road, it is doing well and will be successful.

Staying on Weaverville Road, is Ingle’s Markets #22 replacing the video department with the pharmacy soon?

i believe putt putt used to be in the regent park development (behind dennys). They have 6 locations or so around NC (this one will be a whole lot similar to Hope Mills’ location). The closest one is up in Bristol TN.

weavervilleman, Ingles Markets is busy with store improvements, real estate transactions, and a grand opening.

Store 23; 201 Barber Boulevard, Waynesville, North Carolina 29736-3686: Construction is underway on the expansion and rebuilding of store 23. The former Goody’s store and everything southeast on store 23’s D-side has been demolished. The base of the exterior walls for the expansion have been laid. The foundation for the expansion should be nearing completion.

Store 24; 863 Brevard Road, Asheville, North Carolina 28806-2205: Store 24 is undergoing a rebuild and expansion. I think construction will commence very soon.

Store 31; 153 Smoky Park Highway, Asheville, North Carolina 28806-1138: The site is cleared for the new store 31. No word yet on when construction will begin.

Store 77; 625 Spartanburg Highway, Hendersonville, North Carolina 28792-5762: Site plans for the replacement store have been approved by the City of Hendersonville.

Store 79; South Forest Shopping Center, 780 Hendersonville Road, Asheville, North Carolina 28803-2900: Plans for expansion and the addition of a fuel station were submitted in 2014. No update on when construction would begin.

Store 132; Holly Springs Plaza, 183 Holly Springs Plaza, Franklin, North Carolina 28734-9432: Ingles Markets purchased the shopping center, which includes store 132 and a space vacated by the relocation of Walmart #1217. A replacement for store 132 has not been officially announced. The purchasing of the retail center could be a step in that direction.

Store 134; 1572 Sand Hill Road, Candler, North Carolina 28715: The store count increases to 203 with 99 pharmacies as store 134 opens for business Thursday.

Discussed in an earlier conversation, store 111 (225 Charlotte Highway, Asheville, North Carolina 28803-8628) should be up for a rebuild in 2017 or 2018.

VERY GOOD! Ingles is smart to rebuild or they’ll end up like Food Lion stuck with closing old stores. They are also choosing good locations unlike Winn-Dixie (which went out in NC) and apparently Publix. I told everyone the new building is ugly inside and out and it was hidden up a hill behind other buildings. Terrible visibility. I don’t think they are doing too well because they are always empty when I go in.

Along with a new I-26 interchange and widening, a rebuild of Store 24; 863 Brevard Road will really improve the area. I would rebuild Toys R Us too and the pet shop. I will also predict that the area between the Parkway and I-26 will also undergo significant changes as the Brevard Road is widened and apartments and a greenway is built. Right now it looks like hickville. There is tremendous opportunity being so close to the Parkway/Bent Creek Rec. Area, Outlet Mall, and on one of only four roads south to Mills River/Brevard/HVL.

Ingles has not been active in store construction projects for several years with the passing of Robert Pierce “Bob” Ingle in March 2011 and the expansion of the distribution center and corporate offices in Black Mountain. I wonder if Publix in North Carolina is enough to start taking action.

Publix has many good locations. It may find good locations limited across western North Carolina because of Ingles.

I am surprised Bi-Lo and Food Lion remain open across western North Carolina. Both have been decimated internally and by Ingles. Both Bi-Lo #5423 and Food Lion #412 face competition in Candler with the opening of Ingles #134 and the Ingles #31 replacement store.

“I would rebuild Toys R Us too and the pet shop.”

I wonder if Toys R Us will consolidate with Babies R Us in a new Asheville location as they did in Greenville, South Carolina.

Ingles #8 (Black Mountain) should be adding the pharmacy when Rite Aid #11555 vacates. Do you know how soon that could be?

            Tiger,

Which of the H’ville Ingles stores is the one with the really old ‘pack a day smoker yellow’ exterior? Is that one set for replacement? We passed it on the way in for the Apple Parade, and it felt like an even bigger blast from the past than most visits to that city.

            @ luther blissett:

Store 77 (Spartanburg Highway, Hendersonville) will be replaced. I wonder if it will follow suit of stores 24 (Brevard Road, Asheville) and 30 (East Andrew Johnson Highway, Greeneville, Tennessee) where the store closes temporarily for new construction, associates relocate to other stores, the existing store is demolished, and the new store is built.

and about the publix picked a bad location with hardly anyone there. I seriously doubt it. Ive been to it all times of the day, the slowest is in the morning. Evenings are generally packed there.

I have to say it’s pretty shady and obnoxious to post a shortened URL with no identifying info that automatically results in a file download. I expect better than that from you.

Nothing shady or obnoxious intended. This is the only way I know of to share a word document that I put together myself, and is stored on my personal dropbox account.

And I don’t know about you, but when I click on any link that leads to a download, my browser asks me if I want to allow it. Sorry if I assumed that this precaution is automatic for everyone else as well. Perhaps you need to check your security settings.

That being said, in the future I will add the word ‘download’, and people can decide whether to trust the link I put up, or not. Apologies if I unintentionally freaked you out.

The link for the LoopNet listing that mentioned Publix did not work. This one does: http://www.loopnet.com/Listing/19341697/61-Weaver-Blvd-Weaverville-NC/

It appears Publix is going for Weaverville Plaza which includes Rose’s and Big Lots #5280 (formerly Food Lion #512). I have read somewhere Rose’s lease is up in August 2017 with an option for a five-year extension through August 2022. Rose’s is active in opening new stores in existing retail centers.

I would be curious to know if a site plan involving Publix exists. Most new stores that have opened are 45,000 to 49,000 square feet with pharmacy drive thru.
