Ashvegas: The City You Love. The News You Want. Some of what’s going around:

-Donut World coming to Asheville? Word on the street is that Greensboro-based Donut World is planning to open a shop in a former Subway on Patton Avenue.

-Mamacita’s for breakfast: Asheville burrito joint Mamcita’s is working on a breakfast menu. No details yet on when they’ll launch.

World Made Straight opens: The World Made Straight, a film adapted from regional writer Ron Rash’s novel of the same name, opened in a handful of big cities around the U.S. over the weekend. (No details yet on an Asheville screening.) Rotten Tomatoes  gives The World Made Straight a 67 percent approval rating. The movie was shot around Western North Carolina, including southern Buncombe County, Black Mountain and Madison County. It comes out on DVD on Feb. 17. It is directed by David Burris.

-Dale Neal headed to Pakistan: Asheville Citizen-Times reporter Dale Neal is headed to Pakistan at the end of the month through an International Center for Journalists program. Dale was one of 10 journalists selected from around the U.S. to participate. He’ll be gone from Jan. 28-Feb. 12. The program includes an orientation in Washington, where the journalists will hear from experts on US-Pakistan relations and get a security briefing. Participants will spend time visiting representatives of media organizations and government officials in Islamabad, Karachi, and Lahore. Congratulations to Dale

-Coffee with a Cop: The Asheville Police Department event is set for 8 a.m. on Jan. 24 at Bojangle’s on Merrimon:

On January 24, 2015 officers from the Asheville Police Department and community members will come together in an informal, neutral space to discuss community issues, build relationships, and drink coffee. All community members are invited to attend. The event begins at 8 am on January 24 at Bojangles restaurant located at 99 Merrimon Avenue. Please contact Officer Keith McCulloch with questions: 828-259-5834 or at [email protected]

Coffee with a Cop provides a unique opportunity for community members to ask questions and learn more about the department’s work in Asheville’s neighborhoods. The majority of contacts law enforcement has with the public happen during emergencies, or emotional situations. Those situations are not always the most effective times for relationship building with the community, and some community members may feel that officers are unapproachable on the street. Coffee with a Cop breaks down barriers and allows for a relaxed, one-on-one interaction.

-Pitch for Pitchers: The first meeting of the new Pitch for Pitchers event is set for 5:30 p.m. at Hi-Wire Brewing. More:

Pitch for Pitchers is an event series that brings the startup community together each month to hear 1-minute business pitches from 10 local entrepreneurs. Each month, the event is held at a different Asheville brewery, connecting Asheville’s thriving and creative brewery scene with its growing startup community. The format is a 1-minute pitch, followed by 2 minutes of Q&A, all on the clock. After 30 minutes, the audience is invited to choose the winners with the best pitches. First prize wins $50 and a free pitcher of beer. The next four runners-up also win a free pitcher of beer. Entrepreneurs need only have an idea, not an operating business to participate. Pitches must be able to address 3 basic questions: 1) what’s the problem? 2) How does your product/service solve it? 3) who is the customer?

If you are interested in pitching, send your name and answers to the three questions to: [email protected].

-Young and in the Way returns to Asheville: The band Young and in the Way, the band that last year sprayed pig’s blood across its audience at the Lexington Avenue Brewery’s back-room music venue last year, returns to Asheville this weekend, this time to play The Mothlight. The incident forced the venue to close down for a couple of days to clean up the mess. From The Mothlight’s newsletter:

Could it be?  Probably not but we’re looking for some of that sweet, nutso-driven publicity fueled by a bored populous that Orbit DVD’s always landing.  So we booked Young and in the Way!  Remember that band that shut down the Lab’s listening room after they covered it and everyone in it in pig’s blood?  Them.  They’re playing Saturday with Asheville’s own powerful psych-rockers, U.S. Christmas and thrash-core outfit, Busted Chops.  Now get on WAX and call us crazy!  (Please:)  Also feel free to make anything at all up about us as long as you mention where we’re located and our hours.  ‘Preesh

-Celebration of Joy Division: Looking way ahead, this Peter Hook & The Light show looks like a winner at The Orange Peel:

In May 2010, Peter Hook, legendary bassist of both Joy Division and later New Order, decided to honour the outstanding work of his first band and the undoubted genius of the late Ian Curtis by giving people the opportunity to hear both of Joy Division’s masterpiece albums, ‘Unknown Pleasures’ and ‘Closer’, live and in their entireties. Backed by his new band The Light, Hooky first played ‘Unknown Pleasures’ at the Factory club in Manchester on May 18th & 19th 2010 in order to celebrate the life of Ian ’ one stand alone sold out night quickly became two, and due to phenomenal worldwide demand, Hooky then began taking the show on the road with headline gigs & major festival appearances throughout Europe, a full tour of Australia & New Zealand as well as the band’s first tour of the United States in December…

-Asheville Restaurant Week: Asheville Restaurant Week is coming up later this month, offering some great deals.

Thirty-nine Asheville area restaurants will be offering special menus in celebration of the town’s great food and drink during Asheville Restaurant Week January 20-29. Asheville Restaurant Week is an opportunity for visitors and locals alike to enjoy the renowned cuisine this foodie city has to offer.

During Asheville Restaurant Week, participating restaurants will provide a prix fixe menu, from the following options:

Lunch Restaurants: $15 two-course lunch

Dinner Restaurants: · $30 three-course dinner OR · $30 dinner for two OR · $20 dinner for two

So, about this Pitch for Pitchers thing: Is everyone in attendance required to sign a non-disclosure agreement? Seems problematic for pitching viable ideas that aren’t just whimsy and that anyone well-financed and unscrupulous enough could just run w/ anything they heard that they liked. ??

If you go to the show beware: drummer is known all over the Charlotte area for intentionally punching and kicking little girls in the pit. Hide your kids, hide your wife.

It’s a different “Donught World”, not the Greensboro based Donut World-

=======OFFICIAL DOPE PRESS RELEASE FOR IMMEDIATE DOPE RELEASE ====================================

Correction for the Coffee with Cops piece….Bojangles is far from neutral ground. It is infact the 5 Pointz Boyz turf. This is obviously an attempt to send a message to the 5 pointz boyz in a rude and intimidating way. The 5 Pointz Boyz think that it’s unprofessional and unbecoming of officers to hold their meetings on 5 Pointz Boyz controlled turf. Needless to say, the 5 pointz Boyz will be getting their coffee elsewhere on this day.

These guys aren’t even a band I’m really into, but to try to downplay them as ‘losers’ just makes you look old and dumb.

Quit crying over spilled pig’s blood y’all.
