room_nine_2014Here’s some of what’s going around:

-Room Nine: Room Nine is the name of the new nightclub coming to the space formerly home to the just-closed City Billiards on College Street in downtown Asheville. Room Nine is right next door to the former Arcade Asheville nightclub, which is being turned into a Greek-Italian restaurant by the name of Twisted Laurel Eatery and Lounge, according to the Asheville Citizen-Times.

-Ingles pulls sponsorships: Word on the street is that Ingles will not be a sponsor of this year’s RiverMusic series, a RiverLink event down by the river. The RiverMusic line-up for this year was just announced.

-Odyssey update: Odyssey Community School recently announced that it had secured a lease from the UNC Asheville Foundation to remain at its current 90 Zillicoa St. location for the next academic year.

-Biltmore Fitness closing: Biltmore Fitness is closing at the end of April.

-East Fork Pottery spotlighted: The Madison County-based East Fork Pottery will be featured in the April 3 episode of UNC-TV’s OurState. From the press release:

East Fork Pottery was founded in 2010 by Alexander Matisse in Madison County, North Carolina.  It makes a full range of functional and sculptural ceramics,  fired in a large, wood-burning salt kiln and a line of contemporary, translucent porcelain lighting.

The program airs a week before opening night of Matisse’s first solo museum show, entitled Alexander Matisse: New Ceramics, at the Memorial Art Gallery in Rochester, New York.  The show will feature a comprehensive collection of functional and decorative work from the last four years.  It will also coincide with a travelling collection of prints by Matisse’s great-grandfather – the artist Henri Matisse – on loan from the Pierre and Tana Matisse Foundation.  Both shows will open on April 6th and close on June 8th.

-Mo on the move: Word on the street is that well-known Asheville Chef Mo Abreau, who closed down his Chef Mo’s Restaurant and Bar on Hendersonville Road last year, has landed at the cafe inside Trust General Store out in Madison County.

-Shindig on the Green and Mountain Dance and Folk Festival dates: From the press release:

The 87th Annual Mountain Dance and Folk Festival runs for three full evenings on Thursday through Saturday, July 31, August 1, & 2, 2014 at the Diana Wortham Theatre at Pack Place in downtown Asheville. Tickets are on sale now.

Cost is $65 per person. Doors at 6 p.m., dinner at 7 p.m. Make a reservation by calling 828.225.3497.

-New photo exhibition: Here’s the quick hit on the new exhibition at Castell Photography:

Castell Photography is pleased to announce the opening of their newest exhibition, The New Construction: An Exploration of Craft in Photography, with a reception to be held on Friday, April 4th from 6-8pm, coinciding with the Downtown Asheville Art District’sFirst Friday Artwalk.

Curated by gallery owner Brie Castell and gallery director Heidi Gruner, The New Construction will feature work from artists J.R. Berry, Lynne Bowman, Khan H. Le, Tasha Lewis, and Timothy Pakron. More than ever, the art world is seeing a shift in the way we perceive imagery and the way artists approach artmaking. Artists are crossing boundaries of medium and ignoring any notions of keeping to one medium or another. Photography in particular is growing more and more difficult to define, and the artists included in this exhibition would likely not want to be classified as photographer, but as artist. This show is essentially about the interaction and play between a variety of mediums and craft. In all of these works, the photographic image is at the core, but is wonderfully just the beginning. Each has a tactile quality and almost begs the viewer to touch, and most are even threedimensional. We see these artists boldly cut, sew, fabricate, decorate, and paint their foundation of imagery, which morphs each of these works into something truly dynamic and technically unique.
