As usual, there’s always a ton of stuff happening. Here’s some of it:

-New sushi: There’s a Craigslist help-wanted ad stating that Hisshho Sushi is hiring chefs in the Asheville area. Hissho Sushi is a fast-growing Charlotte-based restaurant chain. I’ve left a message asking for details.

-New juice bar: Loyal reader Marty reports that a local entrepreneur says he’s putting in a juice bar/co-working space at 167 Patton. That location is the former Swannanoa Cleaners at the corner of Patton and French Broad near the Federal Building. The location was home to a woodworking shop, and then a bar most recently.

-Iron Palm open: Iron Palm, a new bouldering gym in south Asheville, is officially open. Iron Palm background here.

-Digable Pizza closed: The sign in the window says the West Asheville pizza joint on Haywood Road is closed for remodeling, but Asheville Scene reporter Mackensy Lunsford reports that the business is probably closed for good. From her recent story:

Brian Good, his father, Tom, and business partner Lawrence Perkins, will open a second location of Asheville Sandwich Company at 491 Sardis Road this winter.

The group, collectively known as Ultimate Restaurant Management, has also purchased Digable Pizza at 794 Haywood Road in West Asheville.

-Raskin update: I’ve followed the career of Hannah Raskin, the former Mountain Xpress food writer who I always respected, since she left a few years back. After getting dumped in Seattle back in May, Raskin has turned up at the Charleston Post and Courier. Glad to hear she’s still writing.

-Laugh track: This looks like fun:

The very funny Joe Zimmerman returns to Asheville to record his debut solo comedy album at LAB and everyone is welcome to come be part of the laugh track! The shows are Friday Nov 15 and Satuday Nov 16, show times 9 pm both nights.

To refresh: Joe moved from Asheville, NC to New York in 2011 and has since gained attention for his thoughtful material and unique point of view. In August of 2013 his Comedy Central debut aired on The John Oliver New York Stand Up Show. …

Joe is an original member of the Beards of Comedy, who toured from 2008-2012, as the most highly requested tour in the southeast. The “Beards” put two albums out; their most recent Cardio Mix, with Comedy Central Records, along with a web series for MSN’s home page that reached over a million views.

-Photographer studio closing: Photographer David Simchock has announced that he’s closing his studio and gallery at 375 Depot St. in the River Arts District that he’s had for the past two years. Simchock said his business is alive and well – he’ll just be working out of his home.

-TEDx AVL DOA: I’m proclaiming TEDx AVL dead for 2013 since I haven’t heard a peep about it, and it’s an event that’s been held in November the past couple of years. Add TEDx AVL to the list of other Asheville events that died, were downsized or put on pause this year: Goombay, Lexington Avenue Arts and Fun Festival, Asheville Zombie Walk and the Labor Day concert in Pack Square Park.

-Calendar items:

-The River Arts District Studio Stroll is this weekend.

-UNC Asheville’s Admissions Office will host an open house for high school and transfer students and their families from 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 9, on campus. Those attending will have the opportunity to meet faculty and staff from every academic area, as well as representatives of many campus organizations. The open house also includes student-led campus tours and sessions for parents and students on admissions, academics, extracurricular programs, scholarships and other financial aid.

  1. Orbit DVD November 5, 2013

MacKensey’s article says that they are renovating Digable Pizza… there is just no eta of when it will open again. I’ve heard a few weeks those plans could have changed.

And I have two words for any restaurateur thinking about Haywood Rd. “LATE NIGHT.”
