Mama Maisha, an Asheville non-profit led by physicians Jeff and Reta Graham, will hold a fund-raising event from 7-10 p.m. on Dec. 2 at Lexington Avenue Brewery. Mama Maisha works at the village level to provide prenatal care and delivery services to women in Tanzania. The fundraising event includes a silent auction and music by Lyric.

-Michael Palascak, a NBC Last Comic Standing finalist revered for his smart writing and strong likability, is set to perform in Asheville on Saturday, Nov. 11, at the Grey Eagle. The show is part of the Funny Business at the Grey Eagle Presents series, with tickets $14 in advance and $17 the day of the show. Palascak has done stand-up on Letterman, CONAN, The Tonight Show with Jay Leno, the Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson and much more.

-The Pet Vet on Patton is now selling 2018 desktop calendars with a “Wet Dog Wednesday” theme. Twenty-five percent of proceeds will go to support the Asheville Humane Society. (Disclaimer: Sammie is Miss May.)

-Western Carolina Rescue Ministries is bringing New York Times best-selling author, Ron Hall, to Asheville to speak as part of the Western Carolina Rescue Ministries Christmas Gala & Silent Auction event Dec. 14 at the Crowne Plaza Resort, according to a press release. Hall is the author of Same Kind of Different as Me, which tells the true story of international art dealer (Hall), who befriends a homeless man in hopes of saving his struggling marriage. The gala includes a silent auction, 3-course dinner, Christmas music and more. Individual tickets for the gala are $50 per person and include dinner and can be purchased at 225 Patton Avenue or online at www.westerncarolinarescue.org. Eight-person table reservations and event sponsorships are also available. All proceeds benefit Western Carolina Rescue Ministries. The North Carolina Stage Company is looking for singers for their upcoming production of All Is Calm; The Christmas Truce of 1914. This production is a paid gig for male singers. They’re looking for guys 18 or older to make up an eight-person chorus to sing songs from the World War I era for the production. The chorus will also sing holiday songs. They’re looking for the following: Two basses, two baritones, two second-tenors, and two first-tenors. All singers must be proficient in reading music. Rehearsals will begin around Nov. 10 and go through the end of the month. There are 15 performances total. All performances are at 7:30 unless otherwise noted. -Fifteen inns that are members of the Asheville Bed and Breakfast Association have collaborated on a new cookbook called Mornings in the Mountains. Check out the book launch set for 5:30 p.m. on Nov. 8 at Williams Sonoma in Biltmore Village. There will be a cooking demonstration by WhiteGate Inn & Cottage innkeeper Frank Salvo.

-Speaking of cooking classes, The Asheville Kitchen is offering cooking classes. The Asheville Kitchen marks the return of Chef Brian Ross, formerly of Dough restaurant on Merrimon Avenue. Ross came to Asheville in 2001 to be the chef at The Richmond Hill Inn, then spent many years as a chef at the Biltmore Estate Bistro, as well as the Inn on Biltmore. The Asheville Kitchen is located at 384 Merrimon Ave., just down the hill from the former Dough and across the street from Homegrown restaurant. The next class: Empanadas 101, at 6:30 p.m. on Nov. 21.
