Duncan_and_York_2013A bonus edition hot sheet, since I can’t seem to keep up with all that’s happening:

-Duncan and York open: The locally owned gift shop has opened on Rankin Avenue. Duncan and York background here. While we’re talking downtown shop openings, don’t forget ongoing Anthropologie negotiations – they’re looking at the S&W building in downtown.

-Tervis to open: Press release here:

Tervo-maniacs in Asheville asked for their own Tervis store and Tervis listened. The insulated drinkware leader has taken its ‘Always Full of Fun’ tagline to new heights with their 26th company store. Inspired by the new multi-color logo that Tervis launched in early 2011, the store design embraces the same fun and energetic look and feel. The use of bright lighting, vibrant pops of color and whimsical elements of decor allow shoppers a unique and memorable experience. The brand and its products are known for having an expressive personality – which the retail stores personify to a “T”. The Asheville location will feature various size tumblers, mugs, water bottles and accessories. Tervis offers thousands of designs, including professional sports teams NFL®, MLB®, NHL® , NBA®, hundreds of colleges and other license agreements from some of the world’s best-known brands like Marvel®, Harley-Davidson, Hello Kitty®, Guy Harvey, Fiesta®, Duck Commander, and Margaritaville®, just to name a few.

-Sold! 97 Roberts St.: The building at 97 Roberts St. in Asheville’s River Arts District sold recently for $2 million to an architect based in Hickory.

-Barleycorn to open: Barleycorn, the new gastropub going into the former Burgermeister’s location on Haywood Road, has set an opening date of Dec. 13.

-Katuah Market to open: The locally owned grocery store Katuah Market is scheduled to open next week. Owner John Swann is a founder of Greenlife grocery store. While we’re talking openings, I might as well list the other grocery store action coming: Publix is building a new store in the former Kmart on Hendersonville Road; a new Fresh Market is coming to the former Harris Teeter on Hendersonville Road; and a new Whole Foods is going into the former Kmart shopping center on Tunnel Road.

-Wild Wing to open, Tomato Jam closing: The Asheville Citizen-Times reports on both. Tomato Jam will close at the end of the month, and a new restaurant will take its place. Wild Wing Cafe is set to open later this month on Long Shoals Road in the former Boathouse Restaurant on Lake Julian. But Ashvegas readers already knew that.

-Restaurant reminder: And while I’m thinking of it, here’s a reminder of some of what else is coming: Chipotle is coming to Hendersonville Road in south Asheville; the pop-up restaurant Punk Wok will be open every Monday at MG Road; the Brazilian steakhouse Rio de Brazil is coming to Hendersonville Road; another Brazilian steakhouse, Brasilia Churrasco Steakhouse, is coming to the former Magnolia’s in downtown; an unnamed Greek/Italian restaurant is coming to the Asheville Arcade space downtown; Vortex Doughnuts is coming to the South Slope; Green Sage is planning to open a new location next to Earth Fare in Westgate shopping center; Golden Corral is coming to Patton Avenue; and Korean House on College Street is coming to the former Fiore’s resaurant space. On the bar front, King James Public House is still on the books as opening soon.

Seven comments responding to the same question? If you’re only going to check and approve comments every few days, and let them all post anyway, why are you requiring pre-approval on comments, exactly? Opening up the floodgates and then going back retroactively to prune out the spam, ads, and overt ugliness would probably take less time, and encourage a lot more participation and dialogue. It’s pretty hard to feel like you’re in a conversation when there’s a 2-4 day lag between posting a comment and having it appear . . .

If I recall correctly, Swann only owned 49% of Greenlife, and was opposed to the sale to Whole Foods. I can’t wait to shop there!

Since this is a blog, and I’m not a journalist, I will pass on what I heard from a good friend who knows John Swann…..I was told he really didn’t want to sell Greenlife, but had a partner and lacked the ability to stop it.

Even so, I love how judgmental we can all be. How dare he sell his store! I get like that too often….but I try to remember that when I have an emotional charge about someone or what they did, it’s always about me and my issues. Dang that’s hard to remember when I’m triggered. But I have come to believe it’s true.

If any of you dont know what Tervis is… Tervis is cups (coffee mugs, cups, personalized items, etc.) that is made in the USA from the coast of Florida. They highly support MADE IN USA. Their products are under a Lifetime warranty, meaning if it ever tears up, you can send the defected item in and they will replace it FREE!!! I highly recommend Tervis. I am glad now that I dont have to go to gatlinburg, online, or to Bed Bath and Beyond to buy Tervis.

We went into the Tervis Store a few weekends ago while in the Village. Nice place and really nice drinkware.

I’m totally annoyed by John Swann and I will boycott Katuah Market. How dare he sell out – for millions – to WF and then freakin’ complain and/or tout his new store as THE place for local food. I’m sorry, you did that once and took it all the way to the bank. I’d rather get my local stuff somewhere else.

So then I guess you have some insider knowledge that the rest of us aren’t aware of? Swann has spoken publicly and often since 2010 about how he opposed the sale to Whole Foods, but as a minority partner in the operation had no ability to stop it. He’s been pretty clear about the things they do that he disapproves of, and he’s convinced enough that there’s still demand for a business more like the “original vision” of Greenlife that he’s going to invest his resources in creating it. How *dare* he try to start up another, more locally-sensitive operation, right!?!

It seems to me I read that he did not want to sell Greenlife, but his partners outnumbered him and wanted to sell.

Swann was not the sole owner of Greenlife and says he opposed selling out to Whole Foods but was outvoted by the other owners.

I don’t get it. He didn’t “take the money and run.” He beat them at their own game then reinvested in the city that made it possible and will offer to the people that made it possible an updated, and perhaps an improved concept.
No beef here; grow your own.

Whoa there. Swann did not sell out GL. His partners went over his head and sold it out. That’s why he’s opening Katuah- and from what I understand he is maintaining more than half the shares or whatever, so that he can keep Katuah local and real like he intended GL to be. I work with a guy who’s buddies with Swann and provides him with some local products, and he’s been talking about Swann and Katuah for over a year now.
