More of what’s going around, including a big announcement from Blue Ribbon hair salon on Haywood Road in West Asheville:

-Blue Ribbon hair salon in West Asheville has announced that it’s closing after a 10-year run. The last day for the little sale that offered up a PBR with a hair cut is Aug. 15. Here’s more:

While this was an extremely hard and emotional decision to make, we know that it is the right time to embark on a new chapter. We have nothing but heartfelt gratitude, love, and fond memories to carry us through our new adventures. Thank you for standing by The Blue Ribbon for all these years. We love you and could not be more thankful to be part of such an amazing community of inspirational, supportive, and loving people. We’re better for having known every person who has stepped into The Blue Ribbon over the past decade.

Beth will be running with a very light schedule in August and will then begin her new chapter. We will be happy to let you know where our stylists, Donna and Anneliese, are heading as their plans become clear. As we are facing our final weeks, we anticipate a very busy time. We will do our best to accommodate our clients. Thank you in advance for your patience and understanding.
The space that has been home to The Blue Ribbon will be available in September for a new tentant. We would love to see it remain a salon. If you know anyone that can make our space a home to their business, please spread the word.

-A memorial service and celebration of Jeff Knorr, a well-known member of Asheville’s music community who died recently, will be held at 3 p.m. on Sunday at the Salvage Station.

-Asheville City Council took a number of actions at their regular Tuesday night meeting. Here’s a look at some of it:

-Council approved an agreement with McDonald Transit for the operations and maintenance of the Asheville Transit System. That’s a change from the current company that oversees the city bus system, a company that’s had significant problems. The Asheville Blade, in a June 28 story by reporter David Forbes, detailed the issues with First Transit. The change stirred more debate, though, when city staff told City Council the change would require $441,000 more to fully fund the operation and maintenance of the Asheville Transit System. Taxpayers subsidize the bus system, which has struggled to attract more riders and doesn’t make enough money to pay for itself.

-Council approved a request the Buncombe County Board of Elections to arrange four additional early voting sites (one each in Central, North, South, East and West sections of Asheville) the one week (including Saturday) immediately preceding the 2017 City Council General Election.

-Council approved a resolution authorizing the city manager to enter into a Banks Avenue and Collier Avenue resurfacing public/private partnership agreement with the developer/ owner of 150 Coxe Avenue.

– Council approved a resolution authorizing the city manager to enter into an agreement with the UNC Asheville to waive fees for Asheville’s Solar Eclipse Festival to be held at Pack Square Park on Aug. 21.

-Council approved a resolution authorizing the city manager to enter into a College Street resurfacing public/private partnership agreement with the developer/owner of 10 Broadway (MHG Tower, LLC)
