More of what’s going around:

-The Buncombe County Tourism Development Authority on Wednesday will deliver a report on April stats, which show that hotel sales and occupancy were strong, despite the March passage of the controversial state law known as HB2.

-The Buncombe TDA will also discuss a new events grant policy. Under the new policy, the TDA will offer a $5,000 grant (with a required match) for small events, and a $25,000 grant to a signature event. Details are still being worked out, but look for an official announcement this summer. The grants will go to fund 2017 events.

Moogfest, which was held last weekend in Durham after leaving Asheville, announced that it would return to Durham in 2017. Moogfest will be held from May 18-21 next year, according to indyweek.com. Check out indyweek’s coverage of Moogfest here. Also, watch AshevilleGrit.com for Moogfest coverage.

Trade & Lore coffee shop on Wall Street in downtown Asheville, which just opened earlier this year, is expanding its offerings. First, T&L was just approved for a beer and wine permit. Second, owners are planning to knock down a back wall and build a stage that will be feature spoken word performances, improv performances, comedy shows and local buskers.

The weekend project to allow local artists to paint the walls of a giant warehouse in Asheville’s River Arts District was a smash success. Dozens of arts worked all weekend to adorn the walls, and hundreds of onlookers snapped photos and took it all in. The Burners and BBQ event was held in conjunction with the annual River Arts District Studio Stroll, as well as a fundraiser for a nearby DIY skatepark known as the Foundation Spot. It was all an amazing, engaging scene. Congratulations to everyone involved!

-The new Grail Moviehouse on South French Broad Avenue near downtown is now open. Here’s a look at their offerings:

Opening Friday, May 27th – 2 features and one classic from our “lobby series” – based on the paintings in our lobby by Gus Cutty – trailer links and more info on our website- www.grailmoviehouse.com

Elstree 1976 (NR) – Star Wars Documentary – Actors and extras from “Star Wars – A New Hope (1976) discuss the impact of the movies on their lives and careers.

High Rise (R) – Based on the 1975 novel by J.G.Ballard, startting Tom Hiddleston, Jeremy Irons, and Sienna Miller. A doctor (Tom Hiddleston) moves into a London skyscraper where rising tensions and class warfare lead to anarchy.

The Jerk (R) 1979 Comedy – Navin (Steve Martin) believes he was born a poor black child in Mississippi. He is, however, actually white. Upon figuring this out, he heads north to St. Louis to find himself. After landing a job at a gas station, Navin is excited to discover his name printed in the new phone book. This ratification of his existence leads him from one misadventure to another — as he invents gadgets, dodges bullets, joins the carnival and seeks love in the arms of beautiful Marie (Bernadette Peters).

We will continue the Thursday Horror Picture show, hosted by Ken Hanke and Scott Douglas, and we will start with the Tuesday evening Asheville Film Society screenings on May 31. Both shows screen at 7:30.

We will have a one time showing of The Stranger, directed by Orson Welles on June 4 at 1:00. This will follow the Asheville School of Film Director’s Series hosted by Frank Thompson. The film is open to the public – matinee $7.

“despite the March passage of the controversial state law known as HB2.”

What do you mean “despite”? Why would HB2 have any effect? The North Carolina economy is booming at long last.

Tell that to all the companies who have lost business due to HB2.

But you don’t care about that, do you, Tim? Christ, you don’t even live here. Why should you care, apart from your paycheck?

But go ahead, shill away, you sanctimonious turd.

So the cross-dressers tried to shoot themselves in the foot and missed. Isn’t it sad when a perverse minority hopes to inflict economic failure on their own city in the name of “social justice”? Kind of like crapping in their own punch bowl. Is this how one seeks to attract support? Good luck with that approach.

Gus will have to rename his event, Burners and NoBBQ, as no BBQ place showed up, which was there complete loss to someone, as there were so many people there, but the hot dog dude really cashed in!
    Stunning event otherwise.
