Here’s more of what’s going on:
-Asheville GreenWorks will hold its annual Trashion Show on April 27 at the DoubleTree by Hilton Asheville-Buncombe. Get tickets here. A runway show will feature 20 “trashion” designs made from materials headed to the landfill, a set design created by Gigantic! using reclaimed metal, plastic bags and water bottles to build an indoor forest, and an interactive plastic-themed performance art by the Asheville Contemporary Dance Theater. The night will include Environmental Excellence Awards given to the following: Lifetime Achievement Awardto Dr. Paul Sisco, a research scientist who has carried out decades of research on restoring the American Chestnut; Individual award to Jay Kranyik, Botanical Gardens; Organization award to Asheville Area Habitat for Humanity; Business award to Craggy Park, Partnership including East West Capital Group, Mosaic Realty and JAG Construction; Education award to Susan Sachs, Education Chief, Smoky Mountains National Park; Youth award to Tamia Dame, student at UNC Asheville; Golden Shovel Award for an innovative, collaborative project that demonstrates a commitment to environmental sustainability to Metropolitan Sewerage District; and Memorial Award to Scott Richards for his tireless efforts cleaning up local rivers.
–No Man’s Land Film Festival, an all-women adventure film festival, is coming to New Belgium Brewing on April 25. The 7:30 p.m. event is sponsored by MountainTrue, a Western North Carolina-based environmental conservation nonprofit. Tickets are $20. The event includes a an all-inclusive screening in New Belgium Brewing’s Asheville brewhouse with seating, hors d’oeuvres, and one beer compliments of MountainTrue. Weather permitting,
films will be screened for free on the lawn in front of the brewhouse. Since the event is in late April, the weather could choose to be uncooperative and organizers are encouraging the public to purchase tickets.
-The Bob Moog Foundation is raffling off a vintage Minimoog® Model D synthesizer that has been signed by the legendary Stevie Wonder. The Minimoog being offered has been played by Stevie, and his signature comes in the way of two fingerprints, which are affixed to the front panel of the synthesizer in a brass and plexiglass archival enclosure, according to a press release. Tickets to enter the raffle are $25 each, or 5 for $100, and can be purchased through the Bob Moog Foundation’s website here. The raffle, which is open internationally, closes at 11:59 p.m. on April 22 or when all 5,000 tickets are sold, whichever comes first.
-The second Connect Beyond festival is set for this weekend in various venues around Asheville. Here’s more about the unique festival, which brings together storytellers seeking to inspire.
-The Asheville Tourists get their 2019 season started Thursday. Happy Thirsty Thursday!
-Flora, a West Asheville floral shop on Haywood Road, will host its second Do-Good Date Night at 7 p.m. on Saturday (April 6). The fundraiser that will benefit Asheville-based, regional environmental group Dogwood Alliance, which works to protect forests, communities and climate in the Southern U.S. The ticketed event features wine and cheese pairings from District Wine Bar and music from cellist Brooke German. Tickets are $30.
–Pizza Karaoke AVL offers a slice of pizza when you sing; at One World Downtown and Ben’s Tune-Up.
-Here’s a shout-out to the Magical Mummies DI team of Haw Creek Elementary. They won the DaVinci Award, a Torchbearer Award, and First Place in EL Escape Artists, which makes them the most decorated team in North Carolina Destination Imagination history. They move on to the next level of competition.
-Artist Jenna E. Jaffe will mark the opening of her new mixed-media art exhibition, The Divine Feminine, with a 5 p.m. reception Friday at The Epione Clinic for Integrated Healing, 19 Zillicoa St., Suite 3, in Asheville. Jaffe is a visual artist, musician, performance artist and educator. The show is a collection of mixed media pieces celebrating the “divine feminine” in various forms and how the images are integrated with nature. There will also be live music by Auracene (Liz Lang) and Madelyn Ilana, as well as refreshments.
