Screen Shot 2014-05-07 at 10.16.47 AMThe popular Asheville Zombie Walk is planning a return this year, with a date of Oct. 12, according to an updated logo on the Asheville Zombie Walk page on Facebook.

Organizers of the event announced last year that they wouldn’t sponsor any official event. The year before, the event was downsized into a glorified pub crawl.

The event started several years ago as a simple gathering of maybe a dozen or so people who just wanted to get together, paint their faces, act dead and scare some tourists. They rose from Riverside Cemetery, shambled through Montford and ended up downtown.

At some point, bigger sponsors found the event, pumped it up, got police to shut down city streets and literally thousands of zombie walkers shambled through downtown. It was an impressive site. The event also took over Biltmore Square Mall one year.

Can’t wait to see what’s planned for this year.

Thanks to loyal reader Jen for the heads-up on this.

This nonsense died out years ago. Zombies are sooooo 2011. Put away the ripped up clothes and fake blood, kids. Time to grow up.

Jason, you’re the worst at checking facts. The first zombie walk had over 300 participants, and was started as a bulletin on MySpace by Dan Burrello. There were never any big sponsors – ever. The organizers put almost all of the money for that up, themselves.

Actually, jackie, FactCheck.org has Ginnie Graham of the Tulsa World as the ‘worst at checking facts’. You’re off the hook, J.
