slates_for_sarah_1_2014Production crew members in Asheville and around the country want a camera assistant killed on a movie set recently to be honored during this weekend’s Oscars broadcast.

Sarah Elizabeth Jones, a 27-year-old camera assistant, was killed after she was hit by a train on the set of Midnight Rider, a Gregg Allman biopic. Seven others were injured on the Georgia set. Jones, who lived in Atlanta and was killed last week, will be memorialized in Columbia, S.C., on Wednesday. She has a sister who lives in Boone, according to her obituaryslates_for_sarah_2

Asheville film crew workers are posting to the Facebook page Slates for Sarah, and they’re posting photos of film slates bearing messages in memoriam, according to Variety. More:

It is also a mobilization campaign to garner support for an industrywide effort to add a watchdog to film sets to monitor safety procedures.

That is a shame, reminds me of Daniel DeLaVergne… another Asheville filmmaker who passed away on rr tracks.

Thanks so much for writing about this, Jason. Members of the film community from all over the world have come together to grieve, support each other and make sure this never happens to another one of us.

As a friend of Sarah’s and fellow filmmaker I appreciate you spreading the word on this.

This was a extremely tragic event that will hopefully shine a light to a very real problem on film sets.

Sarah was not the first to be killed by the negligence of the powers that be, but I will do everything in my power henceforth to make sure she is the last.

Everyone who has enjoyed a movie should sign this petition. This young lady died in an attempt to entertain us. Please help us recognize her in this small way.
