Brent Brown, a fantastic local cartoonist and the best on display at the Mountain Xpress, Asheville’s alternative news weekly, tweeted a link yesterday to a cartoon he says Xpress refused to run.

The toon pokes fun at the Eastern Band of the Cherokee Indians, which claims it has a right to harvest the endangered ginseng root, something that’s a federal crime on governmnet-owned lands. The cartoon seems pretty tame to me.

This comes as Brown has been a bit of a roll, what with a cartoon about the Attack of the Nipples and another poking fun at the name of the Pink Taco food truck. Brown’s cartoons usually get nice big display in the front of the Mountain Xpress book, but the food truck one got stuffed, in smaller size, waaaaaay back in the back.

Looks like Brown’s cartoons are making Xpress editors a little queasy these days. Here’s Xpress editor Jeff Fobes’ response.

I for one think the Cherokee cartoon is DAMN funny! Irreverence is my color though, and therefore my sense of humor tends to offend at times, but I think that too many people take themselves too damn seriously.
Brown ain't nearly as provocative as some cartoonists that Mtn. X has published in the past and therefore I don't see what the hubbub about the cartoon in question is all about…

Jeff Fobes is such a clown. I facepalm pretty much everything he says over there in the comments section.

The new MountainXpress website is difficult to navigate, visually cluttered, and just plain confusing and unfriendly. As a longtime fan of the paper, I'm puzzled. Maybe it's back to waiting until Wednesday for the print edition. Even comments doesn't seem to be working. Maybe your former employers read your website.
